February 4, 2021

For the past year, we’ve removed ourselves from our shared world to protect people we love, but also people we have never met and will never know. On February 4th, a peak of 5,117 people died from COVID-19 in the U.S.

For me, the process of puncturing 5,117 holes into a metal sheet was a meditation, a moment given to each life lost on the bleakest day of the pandemic. A paper veil over the light gives motion and connection to those lives. For the viewer, this piece is a way to glimpse the enormity of grief caused by a virus that took the last breath of so many.

This work is also prayer that February 4th remains our worst day, the beginning of our way out.
